Water Birth

“Nothing in the world is as soft and yielding as water,
yet in dissolving the hard and inflexible, nothing can surpass it. The soft overcomes the hard, the gentle overcomes the rigid”

~ Lao-tzu

Water is an incredibly helpful labor tool. It helps women to be able to relax more fully and therefore experience less painful births. The feeling of weightlessness allows women to change positions more easily, which then helps labor to progress. In addition, the warm water is a gentle and supportive environment for babies to be born into. Some women only use the tubs during the first part of labor, getting out to have the baby on land, while others stay in the water for the duration. We are comfortable with either choice.

Creative Space Midwifery rents two styles of tubs for labor and birthing:

The Aqua Doula Waterbirth Spa, known for its built-in heaters and maximum buoyancy. It is 4’6” in diameter and 2’ in height and holds approximately 150 gallons of water. It is easily large enough to accommodate 2 people. We rent the Aqua Doula for $120.

The La Bassine Pool is a large inflatable tub specifically designed for use in labor. It is oval shaped, 5'5" long, 4'5" wide, and 2'1"deep. It holds approximately 100 gallons of water and weighs around 1000 pounds when filled. It fills quite a bit quicker than the larger tub and has soft, supportive sides. It can accommodate two people, though without a lot of extra space. We rent the La Bassine for $75.

Both types of tubs come with disposable liners for individual use. Though clients are responsible for setting up the birthing tubs, we take on the task of clean-up and removal.
