![]() ![]() I don't think I could have selected better midwives for my recent hbac (homebirth vbac). Beth and Marilyn supported me throughout pregnancy, labor and birth with the the highest level of care. Beth and Marilyn are an excellent birth team, and both provide a level of expertise and care that allowed me to achieve the birth experience I had always hoped for.
My wife, Robin, and I were in a desperate position: our fetus was in a breech presentation at 37 weeks, a rotation (version) attempt had failed, and our HMO wanted to perform immediate Caesarian surgery, as its doctors were not trained in vaginal breech delivery. Our HMO, which hadn’t even checked for breech presentation until we requested it as a precaution, threw every scare tactic in the book at us: “Without the surgery, your baby could die. Without the surgery, your baby could suffer brain damage from cord compression.” We wanted a second opinion, because we knew that midwives had delivered breech babies vaginally since the dawn of time, and surgery was our option of last resort. We contacted the midwives at Creative Space Midwifery. ![]() ![]() Marilyn Milestone and Beth Sagli agreed with us that a breech presentation, in and of itself, is not sufficient justification for a Caesarian surgery, and they were fully prepared to deliver our baby vaginally. They provided us with information on vaginal breech births; their own explanation of the process; the procedures and the risks; as well as a video and a book, both on breech births. They were there for us night and day, with experience, flexibility, and above all wisdom. They were kind and reassuring when we were feeling desperate, and they worked with us on every aspect of our birth. They gave us hope when we were feeling hopeless, and their compassion and expertise made big differences in our lives for which we will always be grateful. When Robin’s water broke and active labor did not progress after twenty-four hours, we had to reexamine our birth plan. We very much wanted a homebirth with our trusted midwives, but most important was to have a healthy baby. We discussed the situation at great length with Marilyn and Beth, who were very kind and patient with us, but also honest. They knew they had to tell us what we didn’t want to hear. When the time came to advise surgery, they gave that advice, though it meant our leaving their care. Thanks to Marilyn and Beth doing the right things, we made a fully informed decision we could feel good about, instead of being rushed without understanding why, and, the bottom line is, our daughter is better off for it. Robin and I thank you, Creative Space midwives, for your excellent work! Robin and I hope to have a second child in the next few years, and if we do, we will start with the Creative Space team next time, for birth as it is meant to be: natural, not medicalized, in a comforting environment with caretakers we can trust.
