Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is also about making mothers – strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength. ~ Barbara Katz
![]() ![]() Occasionally, some women will need the extra support a hospital can provide. It is our job to recognize when a situation leaves the realm of normal. In those circumstances, we readily recommend a transfer of care. Our most important goal is to have a healthy mother and a healthy baby. However, this does not mean a mother must give up her right to make decisions for herself. She can still participate fully in her birth, making step-by-step choices as she goes on. Active, decision-making women know how to be active, decision-making mothers. Our intention is to facilitate calm and gentle births. Women’s bodies are designed to give birth and babies are designed to be born. Every woman births in her own unique way. In fact, the process of birth has intrinsic value for both the mother and baby. By allowing the birth to unfold at its own pace we see fewer problems. It is always amazing to see brand-new babies behaving as if they had always been here. They look so comfortable breathing air, nursing, and wearing clothes. When they are born we do all we can to protect those first moments. We keep the lights low, talk quietly, and keep interventions to a minimum. They often reward our efforts by breathing well right away, gazing intently into their mother’s eyes and calmly taking in the world. ![]() Before you were conceived, I wanted you. Before you were born, I loved you. Before you were here an hour I would die for you. This is the miracle of love. ~ Maureen Hawkins
