![]() ![]() Marilyn Milestone, Ldem, CPM: I have been attending home births for over 20 years, offering women complete pregnancy, labor and postpartum care. I learned the art of midwifery initially through the apprenticeship model as well as organized study. I continue to learn through participation in midwifery-related classes and workshops. I have had many great teachers--moms and babies. From each birth I attend I glean another bit of wisdom and am reminded that with patience, perseverance and determination, birth works. However, my greatest teacher was my own experience of pregnancy, labor, and birth at home with a midwife. The birth of my daughter taught me so much about what it means to be in labor and to give birth to a baby. ![]() ![]() Beth Sagli, CPM: My journey to becoming a midwife began as a slow-growing obsession with birth. Even as a teen, I loved to talk about midwives and I knew I would have home births when I was ready to have children. In 1992, a close friend invited me to her home birth. That experience convinced me that I was going to be a midwife. Eventually, a series of fortunate events brought me and my husband to Portland where I immediately connected with the flourishing midwifery community. I began attending Birthingway College of Midwifery in 1995, becoming one its first graduates. I birthed my own two precious daughters at home in 1996 and 1997. Since then I have been working steadily in the midwifery world, learning the different ways of many experienced midwives in the area. I also continue to pursue birth knowledge through continuing education and I have been a Certified Professional Midwife since 2001. ![]() ![]() Calla Maria Davis-Boozer, apprentice: My personal experience with pregnancy and birth opened my eyes to the power and intelligence of the female body, and I fell in love with the process. My daughter was born in the hospital by induction, and my son was born at home with Marilyn and Beth as my midwives. My experience with two very different models of care gives me a deep appreciation of homebirth and also helps me understand and empathize with a broad range of birth experiences. Shortly after the birth of my daughter, I began taking small steps toward becoming a midwife, and in spring of 2010 I began the midwifery program at Birthingway College of Midwifery. I am happy to be working with Marilyn and Beth and taking the next step in my path to becoming a midwife.
